Design and Strategy: The course, a Clyde Johnston design, is often described as a "shotmaker's course" that rewards precision and strategy over raw power, reminiscent of classic 1920s-style links. It features undulating fairways, elevated greens, and blends Scottish-style elements with the local American landscape.
Water Hazards and Wildlife: Water comes into play on 17 of the 18 holes, adding an element of risk to nearly every shot. The course is also known for its abundant wildlife, including alligators and birds.
Signature Hole: The par-4 18th hole is the signature finish, offering a picturesque view of the Haulover Creek and the Kiawah River from an elevated tee box. An accurate drive is necessary to avoid the creek and marsh protecting the deep green.
Recognition: The course was named the 2019 Charleston Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year. It is part of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's five championship courses, though it is technically located on Johns Island, just before the main Kiawah gates.
Conditions: The course features resilient Paspalum turf on its fairways, tees, and greens, ensuring a superior playing surface.
